Wild, Wild West---July 4, 2007

Happy Independence Day to everyone!

Just thought I would drop a line to let everyone know thing are going great. I am at Presbyterian Hospital in Greenville, Texas. I am staying with the senior resident and his wife in Rockwall, Texas. Rockwall is about halfway between Greenville and Dallas on Interstate 30. It has been very busy with very long days. We even had a case this morning in Irving, Texas, (where the Cowboys stadium is). In addition to the base hospital, we cover the ER in Mesquite, Texas, as well as surgery at some 20 surgery centers in the Dallas metroplex. I put a hundred miles on my car yesterday traveling to cases. I usually get to ride along with one of the residents, but sometimes I have to drive myself. Here is an updated virtual earth link.

Cheryl has been visiting our family in Missouri. She will probably head home over the weekend. We were able to get together last weekend, but Firefall was a washout. I am done here on the 27th of July and I don't have to be in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania until August 6th. That will give us a few days at least.

It was very busy in Fort Worth last month with lots of trauma to take care of. We fixed 4 or 5 ankle fractures per week! We had a gunshot wound we were called to the ER to take care of last week. Likely drug or gang related. Nearly blew his entire calcaneus (heel) off, but we think we can get him to walking again with the appropriate brace. Unfortunately, much soft tissue was destroyed so we will likely have to do at least a skin graft or some kind of free flap to cover the injury. Also, we admitted a lady to our service with bilateral calcaneal fractures (BOTH heels are broken!!). She was attempting to avoid police who intended to arrest her. She jumped from her apartment window which happened to be on the THIRD story. It was crazy.
