North Of The Border---March 26, 2007

I quess a 2 month hiatus from blogging is long enough. Thanks for checkin' in on me Ang! You, too, Amy!

I cannot begin to explain how busy we have been. I just finished a clinical rotation at Broadlawns Medical Center here in Des Moines. You may recall that Cheryl also works there. This is the county hospital for Polk County, Iowa. The podiatry service is very busy there. We held clinic 31/2 days per week with surgery 1 1/2 days per week. I had a number of in-patients to round on every day. I had to take ER call for 3 nights. Didn't get called in. Usually, rounds started at 6:30 am with clinic at 8:00. We would usually get done by 5:30 or 6:oo pm. I got to work with Dr. Vincent Mandracchia who has published literally dozens of articles. He is also the Chief Editor for Clinics in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery which is a very well respected journal. Actually, he is now the Chief Medical Officer of the hospital and this is probably only one of the few times a podiatrist has held a position like this. All physicians at the hospital---MD's, DO's, whatever---are accountable to him. Neat.

My research is going well. Our project has been accepted for presentation at the American Podiatric Medical Association scientific conference to be held in Philadelphia this summer. I will be very excited to attend. The same paper has been submitted to the Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgeons so expect to see it in print sometime in the next year. Exciting!

Cheryl is doing well having underwent surgery last Friday. She has been troubled with a few infected sweat glands (hydradenitis suppuritiva for you medical folks) the last several months. They can't bother her now because they took them out!

Kirsten is doing just fine. She was a big part of her basketball team's winning season and was the high scorer in at least 2 games! She has opted not to run track this year, but is instead serving as the track manager. She made all-city choir as a soprano which is a HUGE honor. Good job, Kirsten!

Wrestling season is over once again. Caleb did not get to wrestle as much this year because many of the tournaments were held on Sunday. Call us old fashioned, but we go to CHURCH on Sunday. Caleb is doing an excellent job with his violin. He has several performances coming up. And baseball has started. The first game is next Saturday. I know he will do great!

Mom was up for a visit this past week. We didn't do too much---just kind of fooled around. It is so much fun when people come up to visit.

We have a lot to do before I head out on rotations in June. Hopefully, our house will sell quickly. That is if we ever get it on the market. Keep us in your prayers on these matters.

That's all for now. I will try to be more diligent in my updates.

It's great to hear that you all are doing well. Love the activities the kids are in. Sounds like you have a great "mentor" doctor to follow. We will be thinking of you and all your upcoming events and changes. Hope to hear from you soon.
